EMDR Therapy

After studying with EMDR Academy, I am now delighted to be able to offer EMDR therapy face to face and on-line appointments. This is a treatment that is used to treat symptoms of trauma.

Trauma can be experienced in a number of different settings. Settings might include home life, at school, the work place, in the wider community or in a war zone.

EMDR works because the “bilateral stimulation” by-passes the area of the brain that has been stuck due to the trauma and is preventing the left side of the brain from self-soothing the right side of the brain. Bilateral stimulation in EMDR therapy includes the eyes which move from side to side during processing sessions, but bilateral stimulation can also take the form of taps to the knees, holding buzzers in each hand and audiological stimulation.

I help clients to “process” the memory in a way that leads to a peaceful resolution. Many of my clients share that they have increased insight regarding both previous disturbing events and long held negative thoughts that have grown out of the original traumatic event.

EMDR tends to work faster than other forms of therapy. My clients share that they have seen results much quicker than other modalities they have accessed. Studies have shown that EMDR can significantly decrease PTSD symptoms in just three sessions, and that the effect is long lasting (e.g. Ironson, Freund, Strauss, & Williams, 2002; Scheck, Schaeffer, & Gillette, 1998). People who have experienced several traumatic events, neglect or poor treatment as children usually need more sessions than this.

The key benefits of EMDR therapy

*Reduces the negative affect when reminded of the traumatic incident.

*Helps to reduce PTSD symptoms.

*EMDR therapy will enable you to feel grounded and connected again.

*Prepares the ground for further therapies in relation to other associated complaints including, trauma, anxiety, stress, depression and addiction.

*Helps to reduce negative cognitions in relation to the traumatic incident

*Helps to reduce negative emotions and feelings.
